That’s how I always made mine. And how I butter toast, jam on toast, pretty much any spread. HAS to be to the edges.

Are there monsters out there who don’t spread all the way to the edges?

Those monsters know exactly what they are doing.

PB and jam requires extra PB and J to the edges with smooth PB and soft, squishy white bread. Fact.

Not enough PB! I am intending to eat like half a jar per sandwich.

White bread is gross. I need grains in my bread damnit.

YOU’RE DEAD TO ME.

I seriousness, I use whole wheat for almost everything, but I prefer white for PB and J :P

Ditch the crunchy PB. You want crunch, eat some peanuts!!!

Still, much love for the venerable PB&J.

I understand that Lifehacker apparently had an insightful article on the matter a few days ago, but what I really want to know is, who doesn’t already do this? And if you don’t, how DO you do it? Try to spread jam on top of the peanut butter? Spread the peanut butter on top of the jam? How?

Well, I’m pretty sure you can also scoop each one of PB and J on the breads like a tuna salad sandwich. :D

Mix both in a bowl first, then spread. Learned it from my wife and she is never wrong.

I’m sure you’re a good person and all, but crunchy peanut butter? I can’t even take you seriously right now.

But then you don’t taste the jam itself.

Idi Amin, but I’m not aware of any others. Even Pol Pot invented Uncrustables.

When my SIL was about 17, my wife and I made sandwiches and she said “Eww, it has pieces of chicken in it or something.” That’s a person who was raised on white bread, it was hilarious.

LOL - an old friend of mine used to call those super healthy whole grain breads that claim to have like “10g of Protein!” per slice “chicken bread”...cos how the hell else do you get that much protein in a slice of bread??? Maybe your SIL was on to something.

My general rule (as a casual fitness/nutrition guy) is this: Any plant product bragging about its protein content should be ignored. This whole “protein as marketing” trend has gotten pretty silly.

Unless you’re a vegetarian/vegan for ethical reasons, a glass of milk or cut of meat provides so much better, denser, higher-quality protein than eating all the soy and PB and enriched breads you can shove down your throat :D

I remember learning that in history class ... although the teacher MAY have been high and eating a jar of peanut butter at the time.

Ha, agreed. We completely stay away from all the food fads outside of medically diagnosed issues. Whole milk, real sugar, whole grains, real butter, lots of veggies, and good meat. Beyond that – just everything in moderation. Also staying away from the “smother everything in coconut oil/bacon fat – it’s great for you!” trends. And gimme my damn gluten. Unless you have celiacs disease no shit you’re gonna feel sluggish after eating a whole fucking foot long sandwich. Portion control, dammit and just enjoy that freshly baked fluffy goodness!

Yeah, you sound like me. All these diet fads show up and we keep coming back to “moderation.” It’s not rocket science. I rediscovered the joys of whole milk and fatty ground beef over the past couple years after a generation of being raised on 80s/90s diet fads (low-fat everything, lots of chemicals and additives). Real food is so much better. And yes, grains are the cornerstone of modern civilization. I love meats and nuts and seeds, but not enough to pretend I’m a caveman.
